Saturday, a day of indulgence

I woke up early today, raring to go marketing. Has been awhile since I went to the tamu, well, to be exact since 23 Dec. Been longing to eat the local vegetables and jungle produce. Thank God the weather was fine this morning, well not overly so, but a little ray of sunshine nonetheless. As usual the tamu was wet and not so many vendors today, who can blame them in this kind of weather. Plus the fact that "sayur enggai idup ibu, balat amat ujan" pia ku endu ke selalu endur aku meli sayur. I missed the vege vendors whom I came to know over the years, well they are mostly my SIDS members and dad's relatives. So the marketing trips usually ended up with socialising, asking how are you and so and so and listening to their tales. Today indai David and endu told me that their longhouse by the Mukah river is flooded. Endu wanted to go home but wondering how she could do that when there is no access to her longhouse. Indai David said "ee, merau ah, ni aku tumu pagi tadi merau meh, naban ka udun enggau lelabi ke dijual"..

Also this morning I managed to menjejak kasih with a vendor selling buah dabai. From his accent, I could tell he was from the upper reaches of the great Rajang river and indeed he was, from Balleh. I told him grandpa was also from Btg Rajang and he asked where in Btg Rajang, I told him Sut.. so the conversation went while his wife was busy weighing the dabai for me..rather pricey, RM14 per kilo but what to do, nyawa ka makai, beli meh, as a former colleague said, "sik bankrap meli barang makan bah"...Then I met indai Unya, selling tanggoi biru.. stopped and chatted for a while, then I met indai Scott with her friend. She gave me a packet of salai ikan bawan.."nuan laun ibu, nyu nadai agi tu, udah abis, nya aku meri sebungkus ka nuan,..." My, she must have bought several packets to spare one for me. Then she was busy buying ikan sungai, ka di kasam ibu, ku iya. That is one lady who is true to her roots, married a Scots, has three great kids, cook western dishes for Sam and cook lauk Iban for herself, she makes great kasam ikan.....taught the children to speak Iban......atta girl, that's the way to go girl.

So the three of us came back with our booty. Here's what we bought..

And you know what happened to some of them from the 1st picture above..

Yes, it has been awhile since we indulged ourselves, well since new year eve to be exact. There just wasn't enough time to do much in the evenings after work, so the staple has been the supermarket sayur, a soup and one main dish. Furthermore this is the only weekend since before Christmas that dad and I are home, for the past month or so we had become semi Mirians. Also yours sincerely and Igat are trying our best to shed some weight, so we skipped dinner most of the times and survived on fruits, vegetables and fresh fruit juices. Kadang-kadang we cheated, dad caught us snacking on crackers in between watching Heroes cd. But mind you not eating dinner is one great way to lose weight. But I don't starve myself, I eat full lunches, lots of fruits and concoct many types of fruit cocktails.. yesterday after lunch I made papaya, dragon fruit and pineapple smoothie, Indai Kumo (she comes three times a week to clean the house and do the laundry, thank God) liked it...dad pejam enchelak mata, he didn't like the papaya taste..

So, I had not made new year resolutions for ages cos I never got to keeping them but this year I promised to take good care of my health, the visits to Normah had been scary...so I have been stocking on fruits and vege since new year and bought my arsenal of vitamins...

Dad and I have been buying books on nutritional health, impressed by the many reported cures just by taking nutritional supplements. Many of our ailments are actually caused by lack of nutrition. Our latest arsenal is grape seed extract and CO enzyme 10. Grape seed is touted to be a powerful antioxidant. We need antioxidant to combat oxidative stress, which is euphemisim for rusting body....Oo, I must be mindful what I write, I am not the doctor-to-be nor pharmacist in the family.. legi dirara urang aku, kumbai sida anak and dadi lutor mami.. But if you are interested, read the book by Ray Strand MD (What your doctor doesn't know about nutritional medicine may be killing you) and the book "The Complete Cancer Cleanse" by the "Juice Lady" Cherie Calbom, and co-authors John Calbom & Michael Mahaffey, PC. Last year when I was told that I had microcalcification on my left breast, I took lots of vegetable and fruit juice and when I went for check up last Aug, the calcium deposits had disappeared. And what Dr Strand wrote had me changed my prejudice against wheatgrass juice. I used to frown when the children took wheatgrass, I told them its an alien drink... not any more now. Apparently wheatgrass has powerful antimutagenic effect, the ability to fight tumors. The wrinkly looking fruit is beet, it is best for liver cleansing, just juice it up with carrots or red apples. Or you may shred it and eat it raw with olive oil and lemon juice. The Juice Lady listed the following juices as "superhero" juices: (1) beet, for liver cleansing, (2) cabbage, high in phytochemicals to protect us from cancer (3) carrot, great source of beta carotene, containing cancer-fighting properties (4) garlic juice - inhibit tumor growth (5) green juices - parsley, spinach, kailan, wheatgrass - rich in chlorophyll, to block the genetic changes that carcinogenic substances produce in cells and (6) tomato, rich in lycopene, esp good for prostrate cancer prevention.
Here's my supply of fruit cocktails.. nya meh mid week, weekend, aku beringku meli buah and vege. Peria is refreshing juiced with cucumber, celery and green apple.

But some things tusah ka dilengka, like this kasam ikan...its a complete no no its carcinogenic.. tang nyamai amat diempa.. kati deh, ila badu mai kasam ari rumah...

And another thing I promised I will give up, wine, well not totally, but I will drink only during birthdays and anniversaries...I did well last week, I did not touch a drop during the wedding reception...Well not that I am a drinker, just that at times dad and I would buy a bottle or two once a month or when friends come to the house.

I indulged... had this ice cream as dessert. Dad and Igat watched only cos they had theirs from Chicken Delight when we went marketing.... I wonder whether I had undone all the good I achieved for the whole week, I did manage to shed a kilo, though..

And we have this unwritten, unspoken rule in the house. When the girls are not around, the men do the dishes after meal, since mom does the cooking. Acih ulu, kala apai Maie nyebut "kumbai dik kala sida niang indai ngasuh aku masu pinggai" ku iya.... "eh, enda ngawa" ku aku, "ngambi sigat agi".."gamal dik" ku iya.."bajik ah" ku aku....
